This training list is not exhaustive but is representative of some pathways to training courses. Please see the following resources for more information in planning your training needs.

Alternative VehiclesThis course provides an overview of the Alternative Vehicle Policy as revised in Summer 2021. It is required of all campus operators of golf carts, gators, mules, low- and medium-speed vehicles and other types of vehicles that are used for transportation and are not traditional passenger vehicles. The course comprises a formal course as well as vehicle familiarization (to be provided by competent supervisors). More info...Refresher training may be required for individuals who have demonstrated poor skills, either by a history of accidents, observed violation of this policy or subject to enforcement action while operating an alternative vehicle.
Refresher training may be required as a result of policy and procedure updates.

Animal Use and CareAll personnel responsible for activities involving live vertebrate animals is required to complete IACUC Training.

Note: The Office of Lab Animal Care (OLAC) and IACUC requirements are not under the purview of EHS. Please confirm with programs as needed.

Basic First Aid (BFA)This training program aims to help participants develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond to a medical emergency. {This is the Basic First Aid } Environmental Health & Safety established an American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) CPR/AED/First Aid Training Center at UTK. The ASHI Basic First Aid training program is intended for individuals who are not healthcare providers or professional rescuers but desire or are required to be certified in basic emergency medical care. There are no class prerequisites. Certification expires after 2 years.
Most courses will be scheduled monthly, first-come, first-served basis. Some campus units will be provided custom course opportunities as prioritized by the EHS Training Manager or EHS Director. Courses are currently only available to campus employees, students, or other sponsored campus affiliates. Workplace compliance needs will be prioritized.

Biosafety Principles - Initial TrainingInitial training is required before working in labs registered with the IBC, diagnostic labs handling microorganisms, or teaching labs that meet certain Biosafety criteria. This training covers BSL-1, BSL-2, and bloodborne pathogens.Biosafety Principles - Initial Training is a prerequisite to Biosafety Principles - Refresher Training, which is renewed annually.Initial Biosafety Principles Training
Biosafety Principles - Refresher TrainingRefresher training is offered every year in the fourth quarter and is required for anyone working in BSL-1 or BSL-2 containment. If the initial training is taken less than or equal to 60 days before the refresher training is sent out, the refresher is waived.

This training covers BSL-1, BSL-2, and bloodborne pathogens.

Bloodborne Pathogens (Non-ResearchBloodborne pathogen training is required for employees with occupational exposure. Occupational Exposure means reasonably anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials that may result from the performance of an employee's duties. The roles that include are defined in the Exposure Control Plan. Initial training occurs At the time of initial assignment to tasks where occupational exposure may take place; and at least annually thereafter.BBP classes are offered in person or virtually by request only. CPR/AED: Adult OnlyThis training program aims to help participants develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond to a medical emergency. {This is the Adult Only course: It is common to meet workplace compliance.} Environmental Health & Safety established an American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) CPR/AED/First Aid Training Center at UTK. The ASHI CPR and AED training program is intended for individuals who are not healthcare providers or professional rescuers but desire or are required to be certified in CPR and use an AED.


There are no class prerequisites.
Certification expires after 2 years.

Dry Ice ShippingThis training module is intended to fulfill the US Federal and International training requirements for shipping dry ice. It is specifically designed to assist in the use of FedEx as the courier.

Training certification records must be maintained by the shipper.

Please note that this training does not address or certify the learner in the shipment of any other hazardous material (e.g. chemical, biological, radiological, etc.). For additional information on the shipment of hazardous materials, University personnel may contact Environmental Health & Safety 865-974-5084 or safety@utk.edu.
Certification expires two years from the completion date and must be renewed prior to expiration to legally ship dry ice-containing packages.

Forklift TrainingEach powered industrial truck operator must be trained and evaluated.

Training shall consist of a combination of formal instruction and practical training. The course in K@TE can serve as formal instruction.

Evaluation consists of machine familiarization and successful demonstration of the operator’s performance in the workplace.

Both parts must be completed!
Initial training must occur at least once.

Evaluation must occur at least every three years.

Retraining can be required by management or evidence of unsafe operations

General Lab SafetyEHS provides a course with a broad approach that ensures basic concepts are introduced.Certification expires after 3 years.

Hazardous WasteAll hazardous chemical users should take at least once. If they generate or handle hazardous waste, then they must repeat annually. If the researcher is a non-chemical user, they do not have to take this course.Certification must be renewed annually.If you are employed by UT you may take the course through K@TE Search for "UTK Hazardous Waste & Chemical Spills 2024".

Laboratory Special TopicsAs needed (e.g. electrical, specific chemicals, equipment, high-powered lasers, shipping regulated medical waste, USDA permit training, etc.)Certification is completed as needed or as indicated by a regulatory standard.EHS Canvas Site
Radiation SafetyAny person who will handle or work near ionizing radiation is required to receive training regarding hazards and safe practices.Certification must be renewed annually.The initial course will be provided with a hybrid online and in-person course.
Radiation Safety Training
Regulated Medical WasteThis training is required for anyone packaging wastes and signing manifests for the medical waste contractor to transport off-site.

Prior to packaging, shipping, or signing for regulated medical waste, all personnel involved are required to contact Environmental Health & Safety 865-974-5084 or safety@utk.edu.
Certification expires three years from the completion date and must be renewed prior to expiration to legally ship or package regulated medical waste.Regulated Medical Waste Training
Regulatory Permit TrainingThis training is for anyone who will be working under the authority of a regulatory permits issued by the USDA APHIS (PPQ, BRS, VS), CDC, USFWS, etc. Note: Biosafety Principles Training may be completed in lieu of this training.
