What Are EHS Services?

Environmental Health and Safety Provides several listed services. Some have direct links to resources. If those do not solve your need, please complete a Service Request Form to describe your need. Note: the list is subject to change.

Response times vary. In general, you should receive a response within 2 business days. Services will be provided according to normal practices and service times. Emergency services may not be available or subject to fees.

Biosafety Cabinets are used in research settings and require periodic certification. To request services, contact Safety Plus.

EHS Software can include systems such as iMedris, EHS Assist, or other Safety Information Management Systems, such as the Chemical Inventory. To request services, please use the Service Request form.

EHS can provide Ergonomic assessments on a limited basis.

Please follow all instructions on the Ergonomic guidance page before making a request.

Only after you have used the self-guided resources can you request an ergonomic assessment.

If you have a known problem with a Safety Shower or eyewash, please submit repair tickets to Facilities Services. If you have additional needs or an unresolved problem, please complete the Service Request form.

Fire Drills are performed by the Fire & Life Safety group. If you have questions or needs related to scheduled fire drills or would like to request one for your building, please complete the Service Request form.

Portable Fire Extinguishers (PFEs) of several types are distributed on campus in key locations. They are evaluated regularly. Related services can be requesting an inspection of a missed PFE, replacement of a discharged or low-pressure extinguisher. To learn more, visit Fire Extinguisher Program. Chemical fume hoods are used where it is necessary to ventilate hazardous materials that pose a respiratory or health risk. They are inspected annually by Lab Safety Services and Radiation Safety. If you suspect your hood is not operating correctly, please use the Service Request form to notify us. Please indicate if you are using a rad or non-rad hood.Complete a Service Request Form

Hazardous Waste is usually brought directly to the nearest EHS Hazardous Waste room during normal open hours. Please consult the Hazardous Waste Pickup Schedule. Some situations may require EHS assistance. If you have a situation for which you need assistance, you have found unknown materials, or you have drums that need picking up, please use the Service Request form.

When a new lab is created, several actions need to happen. There may be a need to generate a chemical inventory or prepare door signage or other tasks.

When a lab is shut down or prepared for transfer to new ownership, several actions must be taken to account for safety and compliance issues.

Respirator fit testing is performed in accordance with OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard and the UTK Respiratory Protection Program.

Processes have been implemented to cover UTK, UTIA, and the GSM through efficient and recurring Fit Testing events.

For groups of 10 or more, accommodations may be made to come to your location to complete the fit testing depending on EHS staff availability.
